2022 Tauranga Hockey Association Awards Evening
On Friday 28 October the Tauranga Hockey Association Awards Evening was held at Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club. The evening is designed to recognise achievements throughout the season and reward the players, supporters, officials, coaches and volunteers that have worked so hard to create such a successful year. Craig Kirkwood, of Endurance Athlete Coaching, was the guest speaker and in reply to our MC Nigel Gregory’s questions, gave some insights on life as an athlete and on his career coaching elite athletes like Sam Tanner and Hayden Wilde who are competing at the highest levels.
Taking out the big awards at the end of the night were Tauranga Old Boys’ Club’s Daniel Elyashiv who was named Tauranga Men’s Player of the Year and Otumoetai Club’s Abby Furmage who was awarded the Tauranga Women’s Player of the Year. Abby played a key role for her club’s premier team that made the final of the Midlands Intercity Club competition, finishing second. Her consistent performances in this competition saw her named the Intercity Women’s Player of the Year. In the absence of a Tauranga Senior Women’s team this year, she was drafted into the Manawatu team where they finished 3rd in the tier 1 competition of the National Hockey Championships. Daniel had a solid season where he was part of the Tauranga Old Boys’ team that won the Baywide men’s competition then made the final of the Tauranga Premier League competition. He had a strong season for the Tauranga United team and earlier in the evening was announced the Tauranga Men’s Intercity Player of the Year.
Tauranga Hockey’s International Player of the Year is awarded each year to a player who has participated in the Black Sticks or Junior Black Sticks over the past 12 months and has had at least a two-year affiliation with the Association during their career. This was awarded to Frances Davies who had a great season representing the Women’s Black Sticks at the FIH Women’s World Cup where they finished 5th and at the Commonwealth games where they finished 4th following a close loss to India. She is a strong defender and is a regular fixture in the team, currently sitting on 99 test caps. The Junior Player of the Year Awards went to Amy Phillips (Te Puke High School) and Jonathan Smalberger (Tauranga Boys’ College) who both had strong seasons for their schools and then went on to represent THA Under 18 teams at national tournament. At her school winter tournament Amy scored 19 goals, helping her team win the Rosemary O’Brien Cup. Jonathan was the second highest goal scorer at U18 Nationals and his strong performances throughout the season were rewarded with selection into the Junior Black Sticks’ Super Camp squad in October.
The 2022 Official of the Year was again awarded to Sarah Garnett who performed her technical roles with distinction throughout the year including the FIH Women’s World Cup.
Male and Female Coach of the Year went to Brent Edwards and Juliet Dunlop-Fraser respectively. Kelly Hudson won the Bigham Cup for Female Umpire of the Year and Tom Rutherford won the Male Umpire of the Year. The Bill Webb Volunteer of the Year Award went to Mark Aldcroft who has made contributions as an umpire, coach (club, college and U18 men) and team organiser.
The night also recognised the following milestones that were achieved throughout the season:
- Bill Webb won the TECT Volunteer of the Year award
- The following players were selected to represent their cultures at the NZ Heritage tournament: Kayli Tuiraviravi (Pacifica), Nikayla Bradley, Tuwharetoa Hapi, Denym Clarke (non-travelling reserve) (NZ Maori) and Gurleen Gill (NZ Indians).
- Connor Garner, Flynn Hutchinson, Emilie Logan, Jaimee Eades and Ruby Evans were selected into Junior North v South teams.
- Emilie Logan, Jaimee Eades, Flynn Hutchinson, Aiden Bax, Micah Pugh, Jonathan Smalberger and Josh McCaul were selected into the Junior Black Sticks Super Camp squad.
- Luisa Balsom was appointed to umpire at the Junior Black Sticks Super Camp.
- Sam Bartholomew was appointed as a Junior Black Sticks Super Camp coach.
- Emilie Logan and Jaimee Eades were selected into the Junior Black Sticks squad to tour Australia in December.
- Hamish Graham received the Hockey NZ Foundation Alan Lints Scholarship.
- Helen Travers was appointed as a technical official for the National Hockey Championships. She has also been appointed technical official at the FIH Men’s Nations’ Cup to be held in South Africa in December.
- Dr John Gemming was appointed as medical officer to the Trans-Tasman Series and the 2022 FIH Women’s World Cup.
- Sarah Garnett was appointed as an umpire manager for the North v South series, FIH Pro League games and the 2022 FIH Women’s World Cup.
- Kelly Hudson was appointed as an umpire to the Trans-Tasman series, FIH Pro League games, 2022 FIH Women’s World Cup, and to the National Hockey Championships where she was recognised as the Most Valuable Female Umpire.
- Frances Davies was selected into the Women’s Black Sticks team that played at the 2022 FIH Women’s World Cup and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
