Umpiring at Tauranga Hockey

Officiating is an essential part of the game, and at Tauranga Hockey, we’re proud to offer a range of opportunities for people to get involved—on and off the field. Whether you're picking up a whistle for the first time, supporting matches from the sidelines, or helping others grow in their roles, there's a place for you in our officiating community.

Umpiring roles exist across all levels of the game, from entry-level SmallSticks Support Umpires in our junior grades, to Club Umpires in senior and secondary competitions. We focus on creating enjoyable, supported environments where umpires can learn, grow, and feel confident in their role.

In addition to on-field officials, we also offer pathways for Match Support (Technical Officials)—individuals who play a vital part in managing time, scorekeeping, and ensuring match protocols are followed during competitions. No prior hockey experience is needed, just an interest in being involved and supporting the game.

We also support Umpire Coaches, who help develop our officials through mentoring and feedback. And for those looking to learn more, our Courses and Development programs provide clear pathways, including the Blue and Orange Badge programmes, with accessible learning both online and in-person.

Want to learn more about the people behind the whistle? Visit our Whakapapa page, where we celebrate the stories and achievements of local Tauranga officials who’ve made an impact on our hockey community.

Looking to see what’s coming up? Check out the Tournaments and Appointments page, where you’ll find a calendar of tournaments throughout the year and opportunities to get involved as an umpire or official.

Whether you're a player, parent, supporter, or simply keen to be involved, we’d love to have you as part of our officiating team. Head to the links on this page to explore more, register, and start your journey.
